The Pain Guy™

Brain & Body Engineer™

I've spent more than 35 years helping people move from pain to performance. But my understanding of rebuilding the body started long before it became my career.

I was born in Oslo, Norway with a childhood hip condition that left me unable to walk for several years. I eventually went from being a kid who couldn't walk to becoming a competitive athlete.

My father was an engineer. Although I lost him when I was eight, his way of thinking stayed with me: understand how things work, see how the pieces fit together and figure out where to begin.

That way of thinking became the foundation of Brain & Body Engineering™.

In my own words

I've spent a lifetime rebuilding myself, too.

Some of that rebuilding has been physical. Some of it hasn't.

For years, strength and fitness were at the center of my work. But my own experiences taught me that you can make the body stronger and still miss what the person actually needs.

That fundamentally changed the way I work.

Calm the brain. Rebuild the body.

I don't start by thinking about what program a person needs. I start by looking at what the person needs.

I've been doing this most of my life.

I started working with professional athletes at 19.

What began in the world of sports grew into more than 35 years of coaching, training and working with people, from professional athletes and entertainers to everyday adults trying to get out of pain, get stronger and keep doing what they love.

Along the way, I kept studying, questioning and changing the way I worked as I learned more.

Brain & Body Engineering™ is the result of those 35+ years, not something I came up with overnight.

The shield

The symbol at the center of the Brain & Body Engineering™ shield comes from Trieste, the city in northern Italy where my father was born. Known as the alabarda, the same symbol is on his gravestone.

When I created Brain & Body Engineering™, I chose the shield as a way to carry a piece of him forward.

Over time, it has come to represent something more to me: strength, protection and rebuilding.

In many ways, my own story has been one of rebuilding and redemption. From a child who couldn't walk, to an athlete, to more than 35 years helping other people find their way forward.

The shield reminds me where I came from, and why I do this work.

How I work

I approach the human body the way an engineer approaches a system: understand how the pieces work together, identify what matters most and determine where to begin.

Sometimes the answer is physical: building strength, improving movement or changing the way someone is training. Other times, stress, the nervous system, nutrition, recovery or what's happening in someone's life may be part of the problem.

The point isn't to use everything. It's to determine what matters most, what can wait and what should happen next.

I build the strategy around the person, adjust it as things change and, when additional expertise is needed, bring the right professional into the process.

The goal is simple: the right thing, at the right time, for the right person.
